Ramadan - important information for parents and carers

Ramadan Arrangements - information for parents and careers

As an academy we want the highest standards for our students and want them to achieve academic excellence.  Our mission statement is:

Our students are encouraged to develop themselves as fully rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals.  We have high expectations academically but we also place a great emphasis on positive attitudes to learning and building effective relationships with others.

As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, we appreciate that many of our students are fasting. This year, Ramadan coincides with the exam season for our Y11 students and our main priorities are: to ensure the welfare of our students, supporting them through their exams and maintaining the highest of standards. We have taken the decision, in discussions with stakeholders, to amend the academy day for the period of Ramadan.

For secondary students, from Monday 6th June until Eid, the academy day will start at 8.15am as usual with normal lesson timings, but will end at 1.51 pm Monday to Thursday and 12.47 pm on Friday.  The primary phase will remain open as usual during this period. To maintain our high standards we expect 100% attendance from all students.

Students who are not fasting will be able to have lunch and remain in the academy should families wish until 2.55pm.  A packed lunch will be available for those on free school meals. If you would like your child to remain in the academy, please contact us as soon as possible on parentvoice@thehalifaxacademy.org

I would like to take this opportunity to make you aware that next year Ramadan falls at the same time as the entire exam period and I want to ensure that we can provide the best education and support for your children during this stressful time especially.  In order to do this we will be reviewing our arrangements and will be consulting with stakeholders nearer the time.

Matt Perry

Deputy Headteacher
